Sanitary silicone sealants are designed to withstand conditions such as humidity, temperature fluctuations and chemical exposure. They also offer resistance to UV radiation and precipitation.
These acetoxy-curing sealants are ideal for sealing in areas of high moisture or condensation and are suitable for jointing around baths, basins and sanitary ware, as well as worktops and for bonding and fixing PVCu windows and panels. They feature a built-in fungicidal formula that prevents discolouration and ageing.
1. Flexibility
Silicone sealants are more flexible than caulks, which makes them a better option for areas that experience heavier expansion and contraction like bathrooms. This flexibility also helps the sealant maintain a strong bond and resist moisture, mold and mildew.
They are ideal for sealing sanitary areas including bathtubs, sinks, basins and kitchens. They provide a long-lasting and durable waterproof and weatherproof seal, with excellent adhesion to non-porous surfaces. They also contain a powerful fungicide that inhibits mould growth.
They are available in clear and white variants and can be applied using a sanitary sealant gun. They are easy to apply and provide a clean, professional finish. They are also resistant to UV sunlight and can withstand harsh conditions without cracking, shrinking or discolouring. They are available in 310ml cartridges that will fit most standard mastic and sealant guns.
2. Durability
Silicone sealants are a powerful and durable product which can be used to seal a variety of surfaces. They’re unaffected by water immersion and UV radiation, inhibit growth of bacteria (including salmonella and E.coli) and are safe to use in food consumption areas.
They’re also easy to clean and will not discolour when exposed to common household chemicals or mildew. They can be used in the bathroom, for sealing around baths, shower walls and basins, as well as in kitchens, and on worktops, laminates, metal or PVCu window frames.
Before applying silicone sealant, it’s important to make sure that all surfaces are free from grime and residue, as this can prevent a solid bond from forming. It’s also worth checking that your sealant isn’t out of date, as this can lead to it taking longer to dry.
3. Resistant to moisture
Sanitary silicone sealants are very water resistant, making them a good choice for sealing surfaces exposed to direct moisture. They can also withstand high temperatures and are resistant to mildew and mold.
Silicone sealants are available in low modulus, neutral cure and acetoxy curing variants depending on the type of movement you will encounter. Low modulus variants require a lower force to stretch and are more elastic. Acetoxy variants release a vinegary smell as they cure, while neutral curing options are more compatible with most materials and take longer to dry.
4. Resistance to heat
Unlike most other adhesives, silicone is able to withstand both extreme high and low temperatures. This makes it perfect for areas that regularly come into contact with water and heat.
Especially useful for bathrooms, showers and kitchens, this sanitary sealant contains a powerful anti-fungal compound to prevent mould & mildew growth. Also suitable for sealing tap fittings, worktops, ceramic tiles and laminated surfaces. It also resists agesing and won't crack or shrink.
5. Colorability
Depending on the product, silicone sealants tend to be tinted in a variety of colors, allowing them to match the color of the surrounding surface. This can be especially helpful when working in areas where you don’t want the sealant to be noticeable.
For example, you can purchase sanitary silicone in white, gray, black and brown. This allows you to blend the sealant with the underlying surface and prevents it from showing up after installation.
When applying silicone sealant, make sure the surface is clean and dry before starting. Wipe away any grease or grime to avoid a poor bond. Also, if possible, use masking tape to create a straight line in hard-to-reach areas. Finally, work in a well-ventilated area if your sealant has an odor.
