How to Choose a Flame Retardant Silicone Sealant

There are many different types of sealants to choose from, including caulk and silicone. You should choose a sealant that best suits the needs of your application.

Choosing the right sealant depends on two factors: the temperature range and the moisture level. A good sealant will offer superior elasticity and water resistance.

1. Flame Retardant Level

The flame retardant level of a sealant is important because it can help determine whether or not the product will be able to successfully perform its intended function. This is especially true if it’s being used in an environment that could potentially catch fire.

As mentioned above, a good flame retardant silicone sealant will be able to protect the surface of the material it’s being used on from the heat that would otherwise burn it. This is why it’s important to choose one that has been tested in accordance with flammability testing standards.

The highest flame retardant levels available will prevent any combustion from occurring in the first place, and will also prevent the release of harmful fumes if the product should ever actually go up in smoke. This is particularly helpful if it’s being used in an area where people live or work.

2. Flame Retardant Chemical Composition

One-component, neutral-curing silicone rubber sealant with excellent adhesion, long shelf life and very good fire retardant properties for construction, glass and window building, as well as industrial applications. It cures at room temperature in the presence of atmospheric moisture to give a permanently flexible silicone rubber.

A curable organosiloxane composition comprises a liquid polyorganosiloxane having at least two reactive groups selected from the group consisting of an alkoxy, a hydroxy, an alkenyl or alkynyl group; a crosslinking agent; a catalyst; and a reinforcing filler, wherein wollastonite is present in an amount of up to 1% of the total composition.

The use of transition metal oxides (FeO, Fe2O3, CeO, TiO2) has been reported to improve the LOI and UL-94 flame resistance properties of some silicone-based composites. The addition of such compounds to PDMS coatings has also been shown to improve their thermal stability [10,69].

3. Flame Retardant Temperature

The temperature at which a silicone sealant ignites is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing a flame retardant sealant. In addition, it helps to determine the effectiveness of the product’s flame retardancy.

There are a number of types of silicone sealants available. The most common are acid-cure, neutral alkoxy and acetoxy silicones. They all have different properties and cure in different ways.

These types of silicones are suitable for a wide range of materials. They adhere to metal, plastics and glass and are resistant to corrosion.
