Difference Between Structural Adhesive and Weatherproof Sealant

There are significant differences between structural adhesives and weatherproof sealants in terms of properties, performance, and application scope. Here are the specific distinctions between the two:

1. Application Range

Weatherproof Sealant: It is suitable for joint sealing of various materials, such as stone curtain walls, glass curtain walls, aluminum, acrylic, metal, and ceramic tiles, and can even be used for sealing joints in wood, marble, concrete, cement, and rock. Weatherproof sealant usually does not require a primer, making it ideal for a wide range of sealing applications.

Structural Adhesive: Primarily used for bonding and sealing between glass and metal components, especially for sealing insulating glass units. It is also used in the installation of glass curtain walls, firmly bonding metal components to glass surfaces, and meeting the design requirements for fully or partially concealed curtain wall systems.

2. Properties and Performance

Weatherproof Sealant: This is a low-modulus, neutral-cure silicone sealant with strong elasticity, which can resist acid rain, UV rays, snow, and other weather conditions, giving it outstanding weather resistance. However, it generally has a lower load-bearing capacity and focuses more on sealing and waterproofing performance.

Structural Adhesive: This is a neutral-cure structural adhesive that not only provides weather resistance like the weatherproof sealant but also has outstanding bonding strength. Structural adhesive has higher load-bearing capacity, modulus, and hardness compared to weatherproof sealant, making it suitable for applications requiring strong adhesion and structural support.

3. Main Function

Weatherproof Sealant: Primarily used for sealing and filling joints between various materials, particularly for waterproofing and moisture sealing in joints, ensuring the structure's long-term sealant performance when exposed to external environmental conditions.

Structural Adhesive: Mainly used for structural bonding between glass and other components, ensuring the stability and safety of glass curtain walls or insulating glass units. It is also used for bonding non-structural components and reinforcement.

In summary, weatherproof sealant focuses more on sealing and protection, while structural adhesive specializes in high-strength bonding and load-bearing capabilities.
